Grant recipients

Niyom Tassaneetipagorn, board member and former president of the PCF, presents a "cheque" to the Cold Compressed Coconut Oil Group of Rawai. The money was used to buy a freezer.

The Phuket Community Foundation is a grant-making organisation; we try to act as banks do for industry, by supplying funding to get the job done. The big difference is that banks lend the money. We give it away, in the form of grants.

We call for grant applications twice a year, assess the applications and decide whom we will fund. We also support, when we can, by putting grant recipients in touch with people who have expertise they need, or with volunteers who can help with the “spade work”.

It is our policy never to fund a project in full. It is our belief that the people who receive funds should retain “ownership” of their project. There is, we believe, a risk that if we fund in full, they will lose “ownership” and will simply be managing a PCF-owned project. Part of ownership is the effort – and the pride – involved in finding further funds and managing the money themselves.

These are the projects we funded in the first half of 2010:

Laem Sai Bakery Group – local group in the northeast of the island making bread and cakes. Need further funding and baking expertise.

Bangwan Pattana Group, Kamala – group producing local foods and souvenirs.

Cold Compressed Coconut Oil Group, Rawai – village people producing high quality extra virgin coconut oil.

Muslim Pattana Group, Kamala – local housewives making hijab – Muslim headscarves.

Bangwan Samakee Group, Kamala – Processing agricultural products for sale.

Local community of Moo 3, Sai Yuan (Rawai) – clearing forest to improve water supplies and create a beauty spot.

Herbal Drinks Group of Rawai – making drinks from locally-grown herbs and fruit.

Christmas Decorations Production Group, Rawai – making high-quality Christmas decorations and other decorative items.

Ruam Idea Paint Group, Rawai – producing hand-decorated clothes and handbags.

Spa Saiyuan Group, Rawai – a group who have a small massage centre in the village but also go out to provide massage – particularly foot massage – at large events.

Kala Rawai Group – creating decorative objects from coconut shells.
